Colorful butterflies are the perfect accompaniment to pretty spring flowers.


You can use these free crochet butterfly pattern to create embellishments for your sweaters, hats, scarfs, crochet bikinis and more! Wear crochet butterflies as a pretty pin to dress up your wardrobe or turn it into a dazzling necklace by attaching a small ring or hook to the back and adding a chain. It can also add a decorative touch to your real plants around your home. The possibilities are infinite!


These would be great for applying to any projects or as home decor for example kitchen towels, making it into a keychain or turning them into fridge magnets, just put a magnet on the back and it will be on refrigerator for a long time. You could also sew them on a little one’s dress or skirt. Or hang them from a window. You could put them on a hat for summer, can make them into a brooch or a hairslide too.

These free crochet butterfly pattern is great for your first crochet project.


Materials


Here is what you will need:

  • any yarn weight you choose and a matching hook

  • scissors

Great for brooches, hair slides, handbag charms or adding a special extra something to a gift wrap. Vary the yarn thickness and hook size to make different sizes.


For my easy crochet butterfly I used yarn recommended for 2-3 mm hook and a hook no. 2.5mm. The crochet butterfly dimension is about 3 cm.



Basic Stitches Of This Simple Crochet Butterflies


Terms used:

ch= chain,

dc= double crochet (UK - tr= treble crochet),

tr= triple crochet ( UK - dtr= double treble crochet) ,

dtr= double triple crochet ( UK - ttr= triple treble crochet )

sl st= slip stitch.


Chain Stitch (ch):

A simple crochet stitch that often forms the foundation of what crochet stitches are worked into during projects.

  1. Make a slip knot.

  2. Insert hook into slip knot point first, bring yarn over the hook from back to front and grab it with the throat of the hook.

  3. Draw hooked yarn through slip knot and onto the hook. This movement will make one chain stitch.

  4. Repeat steps two and three until you have the desired number of stitches or a pattern. One loop will remain on hook.


Double Crochet (dc): / In UK terms – Treble Crochet (tr)

  1. Wrap the yarn over (YO) the hook, insert the hook into the specified stitch.

  2. YO the hook again, draw the yarn through the stitch, so there are 3 loops on the hook.

  3. YO the hook again, draw it through 2 loops, so there are 2 loops on the hook.

  4. YO the hook, draw it through the final 2 loops. One loop will remain on hook.


Triple Crochet (tr): / In UK terms – Double Treble Crochet (dtr)

  1. Wrap the yarn over (YO) the hook twice, insert the hook into the specified stitch.

  2. YO the hook again, draw the yarn through the stitch, so there are 4 loops on the hook.

  3. YO the hook again, draw it through 2 loops, so there are 3 loops on the hook.

  4. YO the hook again, draw it through 2 loops, so there are 2 loops on the hook.

  5. YO the hook, draw it through the final 2 loops. One loop will remain on hook.


Double Triple Crochet (dtr): / In UK terms – Triple Treble Crochet (ttr)

  1. Wrap the yarn over (YO) the hook 3 times, insert the hook into the specified stitch.

  2. YO the hook again, draw the yarn through the stitch, so there are 5 loops on the hook.

  3. YO the hook again, draw the yarn through the stitch, so there are 4 loops on the hook.

  4. YO the hook again, draw it through 2 loops, so there are 3 loops on the hook.

  5. YO the hook again, draw it through 2 loops, so there are 2 loops on the hook.

  6. YO the hook, draw it through the final 2 loops. One loop will remain on hook.

Slip Stitch (Sl St):

  1. Insert hook into designated stitch

  2. YO (yarn over) and pull back through the stitch and through the loop on the hook.
